40 CBSE schools to set up counselling centres for pupils, parents

The principals of all 40 CBSE-affiliated schools in the city have decided to leave aside competition and come together for the betterment of children enrolled in their schools.

The principals, under the aegis of CBSE Schools Principals' Forum, have decided to hold meetings every month to exchange ideas to help students do better. A K Singh, principal of Jawahar Vidya Mandir, Shyamali, said: "The tentative date for the next meeting is January 25 in which a common academic and holiday calendar will be made for all CBSE schools. Also, other topics like starting a counselling centre for students and organizing counselling sessions for parents will also be discussed."

As per the plan, a counseling centre will be set up in every CBSE school, which will not just help children perform well in examination, but also guide them in choosing the right career option.

Singh said, "We intend to exchange human resources for the betterment of standards. For example, if we have a teacher, who is a good orator, we can send him to other schools to interact with their students. We can also invite teachers from other schools to interact with ours. This will be a big step towards personality development of the students."

The counselling centre will be headed by the principal of the respective schools and two or three experienced teachers. Some parents will be made members of the counselling team. Principal of Delhi Public School Ranchi, J Mohanty said, "The centre will not only help students in distress, but will also maintain transparency and a dialogue between schools and parents. A helpline number will also be issued for every school. Parents and their wards can call up on this number and discuss their problems."

The principals have also decided to organize special sessions to let parents know about the performance of their children and how to work on their weak points. Also, special sessions will be held for all the parents of students studying in a particular class together and tips for good parenting will also be given to them.
